Actually, a research statement is a kind of academic job application that includes accomplishments, current work, and future direction.

The statement can discuss specific issues such as:

  1. Funding history and potential
  2. The essential need for laboratory types of equipment and lab area
  3. Potential research and industrial collaborations
  4. How your research contributes to your field
  5. The future direction of your research

The research statement is a kind of strongest research statement that presents a readable, compelling, and realistic research agenda that is applicable to the needs, facilities, and goals of the department.

Research statements can be weakened by:

  1. Overly ambitious proposals
  2. Lack of clear direction
  3. Lack of big-picture focus
  4. lack of awareness about the needs and facilities of the department or position

Why a Research Statement?

  • It is a kind of representation of professional identity and a diagrammatic representation of a scholarly journey.
  • It expresses a logical flow of your research and also shows that it is unique, valuable and easily implement in society for future benefits.
  • It is the combination of achievements of your current work.
  • It helps committees with the judgment of candidates.
  • It expresses your areas of specialty and experience
  • It expresses your capabilities to go for research funding
  • It expresses your academic strength and ability to do something better
  • It shows how compatible you are with your department or school of learning
  • It shows your ability to think as a scholar or a scientist

Formatting of Research Statements

The purpose of the research statement allows you to express yourself in front of the research committee that is attended by scientists both inside and outside the field.

To encourage people to read it:

  • convert it into 2 pages
  • use informative section headings and subheadings
  • use bullets
  • use an easily readable font size
  • make the margins a reasonable size

The organization of Research Statements

Think about the overarching theme which guides your main research subjective area.

Write an essay that lays out:

  • It expresses the main theme, importance, and specific skills that are already used as problem-solving criteria.
  • It's a discussion about the future perspective of your research. This section must be overwhelming to all people.
  • A final paragraph gives you a clear picture of your research.

Writing Research Statements

Style:

  • Avoid jargon.
  • Write an expressive, short paragraph focused on a particular thing.
  • Keep it in the suggested character of the summary level.
  • Make sure that before showing your matter to committee members your matter must be in error-free format.

Content:

  • Convince the search committee not only about your knowledge standards but also prove that you are the right person for particular research.
  • It shows information that is unique as compared to others.
  • What excites you about your research? Sound fresh.
  • Include first impressions of the result and express how to get it done.
  • Focused on that faculty that may be a part of your future partners.
  • Acknowledge the work of others.
  • Use that kind of language which shows that you are not a dependent researcher
  • BUT focus on your research work, not yourself.
  • Include potential funding partners and industrial collaborations. Be creative!
  • Provide a summary of your research.
  • Put in background matter that shows its relevance.
  • List major findings, outcomes, and implications.
  • Shows a list of major issues, their outcomes, and their implementation in society.
  • Describe both current and planned (future) outcomes and research.

Describe Your Future Goals or Research Plans

  • Major issues you want to focus on in your research
  • The problem’s relevance and significance to the field.
  • Your specific goals for the upcoming 3–5yrs.
  • If you are aware of any agency, you can put your name in your research proposal.
  • Explain your goals so that if out of two one is not get funded then other areas or research will be in funding mode.

Identify Potential Funding Sources

  • Most of the institutions want to know if are you capable to get funded for particular research.
  • Try some appropriate agencies or sources that help you with funding.
  • Mention your past funding, if any

Be Realistic

Finalize an overarching theme for your research statement and leave multiple ideas.

Consider Also Preparing a Longer Version

  • Include 5–15 pages that allow you to assess by your examiners.
  • Be prepared for your interview, your examiners may ask you to express your research plan
  • Also include those laboratory items that are essential for your research.
